2017 – The Year of the Best Health of My Life
By early December 2016, I was making some major and stressful changes in my life… quitting my job, moving to a new city, moving in with my girlfriend, a career change, becoming an entrepreneur full time, among a number of other things.  So I had spent several months ignoring my health, both from an exercise and diet point of view.  At the end of the year, I realized I finally had the schedule flexibility to focus on my health again, so I decided to work towards the highly unrealistic goals of competing in an Olypmic triathlon in August. Thus I started exercising once again (I previously played soccer, and did a lot of running), and I started to lose some weight, starting the year under 180 lb, my ideal weight being closer to 147.  Then I found Wildfit, a nutrition program which seemed aligned, but I debated it for some time, until I realized I wanted to master my health this year, and to do that I had to master my nutrition… the best evidence was eating entire packages of cookies or multiple desserts… it seemed I couldn’t control myself, and I knew that I had started the year at my heaviest ever, 181 pounds.  So already having momentum, I plunged in and invested in the program.
I was really happy that I had been making progress on my weight with exercise, but I wanted to supercharge it with exercise.  What I learned was mostly new to me, and I thought I knew a thing or two about eating healthy.  Turns out I hadn’t deeply thought about how I eat in terms of what really matters…. There are several important new concepts that I now had a framework to think in:  What is NUTRITIOUS?  How am I THINKING about food?  What ISN’T food?  What is IMPACTING how I think?  What are the SOCIAL factors?  What about SEASONS?  What are my VALUES when it comes to food?  What RULES do I subconsciously follow? What about BIOLOGY and EVOLUTION?  What exactly is HUNGER?  What does the BODY need?  What ASSOCIATIONS did I have with food?  What is HEALTHY? How do I MEASURE my health?  What is WEIGHT and should it be STATIC or DYNAMIC?
Over the course of the next 90 days, I continued to “release” weight as we called it, and dramatically changed my relationship with not just my food, but my own psychology around food.  My girlfriend was highly supportive and we both learned a lot. If as children, we had been better educated about food by this program rather than by government and advertisers, then we would have it so much easier being able to make healthy choices so it really makes me think differently about how I’ll teach my kids one day.
The program has shifted how I talk about food to others, and I’ve noticed a lot of people in my life asking me for help, or telling me that I’ve inspired them. One of my good friends and I recently looked through all the ingredients on some items in her pantry and she made some major realizations about what’s in the food she feeds her family.  So I feel like I’m changed, and now I can help others even more if they ask.
Eric is an amazing coach who challenges and deeply understands the journey himself, and he knows we are all human.  The beauty of the program is that it takes that into account, and that is one of WildFit’s strengths – it works WITH human psychology and emotions and brings consciousness to them, and builds your self esteem up a little at a time.  The other thing it does is dramatically increase your nutrition while decreasing your toxicity, so these two factors build on each other to build confidence and health, which create a virtuous cycle that keep you healthy, but shift your identity to someone who CAN and WILL be healthy when it comes to Nutrition.  Thanks so much Eric!
