Emotional intelligence (EQ) is a very researched and documented super skill. Throughout my career, I focussed on developing my EQ, leading winning teams, and delivering complex multi-disciplinary AI and technology projects, but when it comes to my finances, I rarely demonstrated the same mastery. I was simply not aware that a healthy relationship, with money, is critical to put any financial education to work for you. Mastering your emotions is the key to spending money wisely, saving enough first, and investing with confidence, and for me, that required inner work with the guru in this area. I had to fully absorb Kens' cherished insights, acquired from observing one of the richest self-made billionaires in Japan.
I am so thankful for the teachings of Ken Honda in this Quest, and how it changed my life in this important area. I took his Quest, read one of his bestsellers (Happy Money), and revisited the Quest a second time, to fully absorb the teachings.
No matter how wealthy or broke you may be, this Money EQ Quest will transform your relationship with money. For me, the Quest had a spectacular impact. We are now more than 4 years later, and the results speak for themselves:
- Our fixed spending each month is minimized
- Our mortgage and credit card debt melted
- Our savings now provide us freedom
- Our investment portfolio is fed first and saw a 40% increase in value
- Our life is free from financial stress and nothing can disturb our peace of mind
But what I am most proud of are the intangibles:
- From an impulsive spender, I am now financially educated
- The word 'procrastination' is banned from my dictionary, I became disciplined and enjoy organizing money matters
- I became more self-aware, open to discuss smaller and larger monetary decisions, with my wife (Luckily, she is a saver making us a winning team (as Ken predicted)).
- The collaboration with my wife created space to refurbish the house, redesign the garden, and buy a few guilty pleasures, such as a fully automatic massage chair, a designer garden, and a greenhouse.
- More importantly, our spending pattern is now very different, away from consumption and towards investments in health, education, and unique life experiences. We do enjoy our expeditions to Japan and other exotic places, and family vacations in Bali.
- We also automated contributions to what we identified as the most important charities, reforesting the planet, and cleaning up the ocean.
With our daughter starting Senior High School, it is so important not to pass on the inter-generational anxieties, avoid living for work, and instead fully enjoy our relationship with money.
Nothing is more fun than spending with a smile (because the savings and investments are already working for you). And be comfortable with the potential feeling of loss.
This is the most important teaching from Ken. The worst financial situation is not as bad, as we might think. With the right emotional foundation, we can learn to deal with it! And with that comfort, we feel abundance, and will feel we have enough money in our pockets to live the dream!
Thank you, Ken. Arigato.
